Manor Park Golf Sanctuary is widely regarded by the local communities a ‘golfers club’, it’s a long, narrow demanding Part 71 course bordered by the Hutt River along the eastern side of the course, and a stream to the other. The layout of the course typically produces straight-hitting good quality golfers and Manor Park are proud to have notable examples of this including Michael Campbell, Gareth Paddison, Daniel Hillier, Lynette Brooky and Julianne Alvarez, all of whom have made their mark on both the national and international stages with great success.
The club has a rich history and in 2013 celebrated its centenary when more that 500 past and present members participated in various events and social activities over a four day period, and today still prides itself on its friendliness.
Des Hager, a member at Manor park for over 65 years said - “It has always had a good camaraderie. The guys at Manor Park are a very good team, and Thursday Club is always a lot of fun for us seniors.”
We have an 18-Hole championship Part-71 golf course set in beautiful native bush and wetlands with gently rolling fairways bordered by the Hutt River to the East and the Haywards Stream to the West. The course is home to native flora and fauna as well as 20 species of bird and other wildlife, and we strive to achieve compatibility and harmony between the needs of the golfer and the surrounding environment. The club is a haven for golfers of all abilities and services the wider Wellington area, it is well known for its extensive practice facilities, including a Par-3 practice hole and green (the ‘Porthole’), a separate practice fairway area as well as chipping, putting and bunker practice greens, and driving nets. Other facilities include a two-storied clubhouse with bar, lounge and restaurant, available for private and corporate functions, and a ground floor ‘Sprig Bar’ with a deck overlooking parts of the well-manicured course.
For the budding golfer, we have an active junior club with a highly respected coaching programme (Operation 36) that is currently managed by Dean Kingsbeer. There is also a commitment to increase the number of women playing golf.
Manor park is proud of its commitment to the environment and closely follows the guidelines issued by the internationally recognised New York based Audubon International and its ‘Cooperative Sanctuary Programme’ for golf courses.
As a result the club fosters habitat and cares for a wide variety of native birds residing on the golf course and its immediate environs. There is an ongoing and continuous process involving management and enhancement of wildlife habitat, with guidance from NZ Bird and Game, as well as water resource management, a reduction in water and chemical usage, a commitment to recycling of waste, and a plan to include the community and club members in these activities and initiatives.
Manor Park Golf Club is governed by a Board of Management, it has an excellent mix of experienced sports management and associated business people tasked by the clubs constitution to foster the members interests, to develop the club, the course and its facilities for both the present and future generations of golfers. And our aim is to make Manor Park the ‘first choice’ golf club in Wellington, and our slogan is:
